There are 15 work places in Nawalapitiya Area. 8 of them are tea estates and 7 of them are villages. There is also a Sub Centre of Satyodaya at Nawalapitiya. It facilitates lot of programmes. The Sub Centre facilitates and helps the other organizations to organize collective efforts on various current issues. Bowhill, Marivila Lower Division and Upper Division, Montecristo, Choloankanda and Green Wood are State owned estates and managed by the Janatha Estate Development Board (JEDB). After its privatization process, the Government still retains some estates. Coolbawn and Revenscrieg are owned by private individuals. The common problem for both of these estates is the absence of any health and welfare activity. Though there are Trade Unions they are not effective in fulfilling workers' demands. These estates do not get any benefit from the government proposed schemes such as housing, welfare and salary increasement. Satyodaya initiated a housing scheme at Coolbawn estate by coordinating different stake holders with immense difficulties. Helvetas supported Satyodaya to launch this difficult coordination between the Ministry of Public Utilities and Estate Housing, National Housing Development Authority, The owner of the estate, and Land Reform Commission etc. Both category of these estates (state owned and privately owned) face problems related to insufficient income, lack of basic facilities, obstacles to get good education and the lack of alternative leadership among many other problems.
Among the work that Satyodaya undertakes in the Nawalapitiya Area are Health and Nutrition, Water Projects, Vocational Training, Motivating people to have their bacis facilities, Leadership Training Programmes, and quite number of other programmes. People of the Area trust for its credibility and genuinness. |
