Pussellewa Area

At Pussellawa Area we are working at 10 locations. Nine of them are Tea Estates and one is a Village.

The Estates in the Pussellawa Area are privatized company owned Estates. The Managing Agent is the Free Lanka Management Company.

Since, these estates are under one company and are also in the same geographical area, they have a commonality in their problems. The common features could be listed out as follows:

  • Lack of involvement of the Plantation Housing and Welfare Trust, and the Management in providing basic facilities to the workers.
  • Excessive control by the Management.
  • Trade Union rivalry
  • Political influences from the powerful plantation based politicians (in positive and negative ways).
  • Sense of isolation
  • Lack of health related basic facilities
  • Insufficient income
  • Obstacle to education though the new generation is keen on education.

The only village is a typical Kandyan Village which depends on the agricultural activities. The profit orientation is a losing element in the present day small scale agriculture. Many have abandoned their paddy cultivation due to unproductivity and unprofitability. Hence many work as labourers at nearby estates. The marketing aspect of their products is also a huge problem for their Village.

Most of the problems and activities are self explanatory in the attached programme. Since Pussellawa is a small town, the Area Programmes are geared to capitalize the town situation towards workers benefits. Some programmes, such as Children's Rights Programmes, Workers Education etc. will put the Estate workers in contact with the other people and other ethnic groups.
